Craig S. Kaplan: Fivefold tilings
Is it possible to construct a tiling of the plane in which every tile has fivefold symmetry? Although this problem is easy to state and understand, little is known about whether such a tiling can or cannot exist. Stranger still, many simple variations of the problem lead immediately to solutions. In this workshop we will explore the fivefold tiling problem, and examine some failed attempts to build solutions. These false starts will recall the work of some of history's great thinkers, including Albrecht Durer and Johannes Kepler. By manipulating physical tiles, we will develop an intuitive sense for the difficulty of solving this problem or proving it to be unsolvable.
